MORE THAN JUST AN ACTING CLASS

SOFL Theatremakers takes Theatre Education and the study of the craft very seriously. We highly value this empowering learning environment as one of the major cornerstones of our company. We are committed to INSPIRING, EDUCATING and EMPOWERING artists and artistic leaders of tomorrow…TODAY!

Some of the undeniable benefits that theatrical education provides include:

SELF-CONFIDENCE: By performing in front of an audience, students get the confidence to trust in their own ideas and abilities. This will be applied to life, career and school. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75 % of people fear public speaking over death. Through performance, this fear is eased at worst and eliminated at best.

  • IMAGINATION: Thinking outside the box and interpreting familiar material in new ways. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

  • EMPATHY: Acting in roles for different situations, time periods and different cultures promotes compassion and develops an open-mindedness and understanding for others’ feelings and viewpoints.

  • COLLABORATION: It combines the new ideas and abilities of its participants. This cooperative learning includes discussing, sharing, negotiating, rehearsing and performing.

  • CONCENTRATION: Performing in front of others develops a constant focus of mind, body, and voice which also helps in school and in life.

  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS: In classes, workshops, rehearsals or performances; a student enhances their verbal and nonverbal expression of ideas. Theatre education also improves voice projection, articulation of words and fluency with language.

  • EMOTIONAL OUTLET: When working on dramatic material, the student is allowed to express a range of emotions. Sadness, aggression and tension are released in a safe, controlled environment, reducing antisocial behaviours.

  • RELAXATION: Theatre activities reduce stress by releasing mental, physical and emotional tension.

  • PHYSICAL FITNESS: Movement in drama improves body balance, coordination, flexibility and control.

  • BUILDS COMMUNITY: When participating in theatre classes or shows, many students find their "tribe”.
